These adaptations of well-loved Bible stories are suitable for parents or carers to read to children, or for young readers to read on their own. They have been given local settings and visual references to which South African children will relate. Although the Biblical facts are correct, the author’s very modern approach sets it apart from other stereotypical Bible story treatment. The stories maintain a focus on God as a father figure, and encourage children to be considerate and show love and compassion for others. Everyday problems facing children, which may cause them anxiety or fear are also tackled. Every story ends with a simple prayer, relevant to the lesson in the story.

Solomon the clever king

1 KINGS 4 VERSE 30

David was a good king. He brought all the Israelites together as one nation. He brought the Covenant Box back to Jerusalem. He wanted to build a beautiful temple, but God said: ‘Leave the temple for your son, Solomon, to build one day.’

Everything happened as God said. Solomon became king in his father’s place. He tried hard to be as good a king as his father, but it wasn’t easy. When you’re a king, people come to you for help and ask you to solve their problems. Solomon wished that he had more brains.

One night God appeared to him in a dream. ‘How can I help you?’ asked God.

‘Oh, Lord, help me to obey You and please make me more clever. Much more clever.’

God smiled broadly. ‘Isn’t this Solomon something!’ he said happily. ‘He didn’t ask for gold or silver or a long life. He rather wants to be clever. I’m so proud of him. I’ll make him really clever and very rich too. And I’ll give him an extra long life.’

Soon the whole world knew about Israel’s clever king. People travelled from far away to meet King Solomon. They listened to his stories and asked his advice. They spoke about the enormous wealth God had given him and the fantastic temple he was building. ‘Everything in the temple is covered with gold and silver and jewels,’ they gasped with excitement. ‘Even the furniture is covered in pure gold!’

When the temple was ready, they had a big festival with great processions. The priests wore grand clothes and carried the Covenant Box proudly into the temple. Solomon prayed and asked God’s blessing. Suddenly a bright light appeared. It was so bright, the people had to cover their eyes. They all knew that God was in the temple.

Then it was time to party. For seven days!

PRAYER: Dear Jesus, thank you for always helping me when things are too hard for me. Amen.
